Yes, although it would be possible to ignore the result it would be total suicide for the Tories. They'd be swept from power by UKIP who wouldn't bother with any referendums, invoking article 50 would be job 1 as soon as they were in power.
Much as I detest the Tories I really don't want UKIP stepping into the shoes of an actual potential party of government. I suspect, with one definite exception, I'm not the only person on here who feels that way.

I can’t imagine that UKIP would have the nouse to even know where to begin after they invoke Article 50. They’d probably all go down the pub for a “job well done” drink and forget that there’s a country to run.

Also looks like we’ll be getting EEA - which is basically the same deal as we have now, but without being part of the rule setting process. That includes any veto on Turkey joining. That “control our borders” catchphrase seems a little hollow at the moment.

So all of George's threats and predictions he's so far had to go back on, while Boris has now stated we'll be working more intensely with the EU after he backed leaving... It's like they're a pair of lying bastards and the public wanted to stick the boot in, isn't it?

Hopefully the media will find pictures of Boris pulling more silly faces. I mean, it’s not hard, is it?

We must bring the country together, Cameron says - BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-e ... m-36642667

Quote:
David Cameron has said the government has a "fundamental responsibility to bring our country together" in the aftermath of the EU referendum.

He told MPs that negotiating an exit would be the civil service's most complex and important task for decades.

Allies of Jeremy Corbyn have insisted he will not resign in the wake of the Brexit vote, accusing MPs seeking to depose him of "subverting" democracy.

The Labour leader faces a motion of no confidence in him on Tuesday.

A secret ballot on Mr Corbyn's leadership will be held after nearly 40 of his shadow ministerial team resigned.

The result, however, will not be binding on the Labour leader and allies of Mr Corbyn has insisted he will stand in any subsequent leadership election if an alternative candidate puts themselves forward.

UK financial markets have remained volatile in the wake of the Brexit vote, with sterling plunging to a 31-year low against the dollar, and some share trading temporarily halted.

The UK has also lost its AAA credit rating after it was downgraded by Standard and Poor's. The country was also downgraded from AA+ to AA with a negative outlook by ratings agency Fitch.

Trebles all round!

Reality Check: Have Leave campaigners changed their minds?

Quite a good article in the Torygraph

The four questions every wannabe prime minister must answer

But to summarise:

Quote:
First is to answer the question the Leave campaign most conspicuously refused to address: what is the relationship with Europe we are now aiming for? Are we open to joining the European Economic Area.... ditching the commitment to control immigration – or are we putting migration controls first and taking the economic consequences of that?.

Second is the related challenge of giving businesses confidence to invest in the UK, or to think again about relocating their operations abroad.

Third dimension is scarcely less vital: having a plan for keeping the United Kingdom together.... Scottish independence, the delicate position of Northern Ireland, and the exposed position of Gibraltar.

Final dimension is a more partisan requirement, ....next Tory leader has to be able to keep the Labour Party pushed to the fringes of politics,

A leader who can satisfy these needs is rare indeed.

A nice article

Interesting tweet I saw outlined the fact that by sheer demographics, by the time Article 50 negotiations complete, the country will actually be in the majority for remain. The logic goes something like this..

Voters over 75 predominantly voted leave, while voters under 21 predominantly voted remain. Say the Article 50 negotiations go down to the wire, and we formally leave the EU in 2.5 year's time. In that 2.5 years, enough people over 75 will die of natural causes and enough people will reach 18 for the voting balance to tip, and remain will then be in the majority.

Of course the logic completely ignore the lump in the middle, assuming they would all vote the way they did before and none would change their vote as they got older in the next two years. I think that's a not unreasonable assumption but it's an assumption nonetheless. As is that people hitting 18 in two years would have roughly similar attitudes to the people aged 18 now. So it's an interesting thought experiment rather than anything you'd base legislation on but it does show the extreme nature of the split between the old and the young, and how we probably should think more in the long term.

Quote from the Guardian live blog today, talking about the surge in applications for Irish passports in the UK..

Quote:
One woman who declined to be filmed admitted that she had voted to leave the European Union last week, but was now concerned about the economic consequences and wanted to get Irish passports for her family.

'Loyalist East Belfast' is pretty much out of Irish application forms.
