clicky As MS has no control on how the OEM's build there systems I think Monkey boy, has been sniffing the laughing gas again. Though this comment clearly shows the differing strategies Apple and MS have:

Microsoft really doesn't seem to understand what business it is in. Its commercials and Uncle Fester's comments give the impression Microsoft believes its a hardware company. No wonder it seems a little aimless and its financials are nothing to write home about. But I did like this bit: No one could ever accuse MS of coming to market with high-quality products, and it seems Uncle Fester agrees.

Because they are one of the last of the "traditional" hardware companies in the PC business that provide a bespoke operating system for their computers. The rest all jumped ship in the 80s and early 90s and started shipping MS-DOS and Windows, instead of investing time, effort and money in developing their own operating systems (well, some started doing that in the 70s with CP/M, but that is a story for another time). Today, because Microsoft sell the operating system that a majority of machines use, people tend to assume that all operating systems should be sold independently of hardware.

Although MS don't make PC's most of its partners do. Some PC makers are starting to emphasise the kind of aesthetic appeal that recent Apple PC's have displayed. Let's face it you don't have to be too smart to figure-out that if people will pay £200+ over the odds for a pretty case that costs £10 to make in a Chinese sweatshop, your business will be more profitable. Even the average CEO should be able to work that one out....
Just look at Apple's dominance of the £1000+ market. Fan-persons will bray about OSX, but said fan-people aside nobody really gives a 4X about OSX, Windoze or LINUX, anymore than most people care about Chrome, Firefox or IE. Its the style that counts, trust me.
Sony have dipped the odd toe into this market, but have never really delivered anything special. Given that Apple are now simply OEMing using Intel's products (like most other makers) the market is ripe for a brand like B&O to come in with all that Scandawegian style at a premium price....

Still running Windows tho, so it would be a dog no-one wants to give a home to, just like the other "premium" computers that run Windows. Even B&O can't polish that turd.

apart from the 8 million people who download the W7 RC, thats a lot of homes with polished turds and the clickythats one hell of a lot of turds. I bet those dogs will be tired. So its going to be a totaly failure, well except for the turd polishers.

I saw it. You're wrong. And how many of those are running on "premium" PCs, which is the topic at hand. Do try to keep up bobs.

Probably a suprisingly large amount. As a lot of those would be enthusiasts and nerds. Who are more likely to have "premium" class computers. Although a fair amount of those will be self build, so will definatley have the high price and depending on thier ability maybe high quality

Sorry we're not talking about the roll-your-own variety. In the real computer world, people just don't seem to buy expensive PCs running Windows. Strange, but apparently true.

One hates to disagree, but the "premium" market I was talking about is almost entirely Laptops\Notebooks. I probably failed to make that clear in my first post. Apple has virtually no presence at all in the serious "premium desktop\workstation" marketplace, aside from a few diehards in the publishing and "creative" businesses. There are very large numbers of "Pee Cees" sold at and above £1000 pe runit for scientific, graphics and numerical modelling purposes and as Games machines. Virtually none of them are Apples. It may make you feel comfortable to dismiss Windowsfrom some self-satisfied Parnassian mountain top, but most people these days simply buy a PC irrespective of the O/S. Apple buyers rate prettiness highly the rest of us don't.

In the real computing world people get the systems required to do the job. Otherwise your just paying for "flashness" regardless of who made it etc. Monkey boy has no chance of having "cool" windows based PC's. The computer part may look cool but the OS Winwhatever is never going to be "cool".

You didn't need to, I assumed you were talking about laptops. Either way, the NPD report - for what it's worth - has the vast majority of people who buy computers costing in excess of $1000 buying them from Apple. Make of that what you will. Oh I do love a tired cliche. But if ugliness is your thing, be my guest. I hear Ms Winehouse is single.

The NPD report is US centric and is only of value in the US retail market. To extrapolate to the worldwide market would be false. It may in fact be a reflection of the world market or may not.
