We used to do that on Halo. I was called "a flying penis", and my friend was called "Rednecks". It looked amazing when "x was killed by a flying penis". :)

Interestingly enough, on the CPC Counterstrike server, it used to be ban for racism, ban for hate-speech, but using the word "gay" negatively wasn't bannable.

Gay is a more difficult one, because it has so many meanings and only one of those is to relate to homosexuals.

In fact, it is only in recent terms that gay has had negative connotations.

Being a "gay blade" was a good thing, even when I was young. :?

1940's: Gay = colourful/pretty
1980's: Gay = homosexual
2000's: Gay = generic derogatory term.

I think the word is still evolving. I've heard people who have nothing against gays use it as a derogatory term. It might not sound bad if it doesn't mean homosexual, but let's not forget it evolved directly from a negative view of that and as such will still cause a lot of offence if used.
